Downfall of all great games..

It may just be me... but I'm sick of seeing great games get ruined by large commercialization and the fact that all of the companies that make them are money hungry! It seems if a game comes out and it's an amazing hit, the company that made that game will for sure ruin it a sequal that simply puts the name to shame!

Here's a couple examples of what I mean:
Counter-Strike (a Half-Life mod), started out as an amazing hit created by some canadians with time on their hands. It was such a hit that Valve purchased the mod so that they could package and distribute it for their own profit. Not a bad idea at first. It brought the game to a lot of people that may not have ever heard of it otherwise. In fact, the company worked good with the game for a while, they regularly patched the game fixing bugs and fine-tuning the engine. They even adjusted the way each weapons recoil reacted after each patch, which added to replay value for long-term players as well as evening the playing field for newbies. However, when they made Counter-Strike: Source, everything changed. There was no more dynamic to the game-play. You could no longer master how your favorite weapon would fire, and therefore no matter how much you played it you were still just as good as the kid that just installed it...
Another prime example is Modern Warfare. Now, I wont go into as much detail with this one since i've already said how i feel about it.. but basically you have a game that was way more of a hit than anybody could have guessed. I mean come on, they did it right, decent balance of weapons, the idea of  "perks", "kill streak rewards" and a variety of game modes to fit different people, or just the mood you're in that day! MW2 just got a little crazy.. Mainly with their crazy perks and kill streak rewards.. I can find some form of realism in almost every perk from MW.. however in MW2... well, you may try to fight it, but you will ALWAYS recieve fall damage.. and a tactical nuke that simply ends the game?! Lack of dedicated servers for me means a lot because i like playing on servers with tactical rules of engagement, which simply isn't an option anymore.

I could probably come up with more examples (L4D/L4D2), but maybe later...

  1. I loved playing cs 1.6 as a kid, never played css. As for modern warfare, it seems cartoony to me, but is alot of fun hanging with your friends yelling at the screen after a bake sesh. Great post :)

  2. This is why we keep supporting the up and comers. Indie developers like the dude doing Minecraft (The next big thing) and whoever was behind Samorost (a really fun little puzzle/adventure game) need our support like we need support for our blogs and our readership.

You are quite right, in a sense. The reality is, if every turned attention to supporting these indie developers than they would either A: be bought out, B: Start mass producing because they see the profit to be made themselves. It's sad but true. I've only somewhat seen Minecraft, but Samarost is amazing!!

  4. You could probably think of more for the left for dead series? I could think of millions, what a shit in the bed on Valve's behalf.

I played 1.5 and 1.6 as a kid all the time, and source was definitely more user friendly, when I lost all my skill source was definitely the place to go, although you still can be really good and master your weapons to an n'th degree, you can still have a chance to get kills, a chance that doesnt exist in modern 1.6 servers (plus the french are batshit crazy).

MW sucks and always will. Ugh. Great post btw! ;)

You are very right about modern 1.6 servers. 1.6 might as well be dead now a days. It's so full of bots and cheats it's not even worth trying to find a decent server anymore..

  6. Bad sequels happen but I don't think they're as common as this blog makes them out to be. Or maybe I'm just inferring something that ain't there.

ah, i was waiting for somebody to point that out after looking back over my own post!

It seems that in the most popular/biggest hits games, there is a very sad/large chance that a terrible sequel will be made. I can't think of any exceptions to this atm.. if you do plz post.

  9. Let's not even discuss where the RPG genre has gone in the past several years.

  10. I am sick and tired of DLC, if you have adds in game and it costs money to buy the game itself. I don`t think you should have to pay for DLC or include it into the original game and don`t just go for the cashgrab.

  11. Colin- perfect example of sequel that totally licks balls, and not only that, but destroyed the online community for the original title- Gears of War 2.... now i cant find a decent game on GoW1, and the second game is just awful. whats with all these games these days, mostly for console, that dont allow any customization or community in their online multiplayer experience?

  12. It's all about the money these day, video game companies don't care as much as they use to.
